Professor Ana Cristina Bicharra Garcia (PPGI-UNIRIO) will be the invited national speaker at the 22nd Brazilian Symposium on Information Systems (SBSI 2026), to be held from May 25 to 28, 2026, in Vitória – ES.
Title: From Predictive to Generative: Designing Responsible Sociotechnical Systems for the Brazilian Reality
Summary: Artificial Intelligence has evolved from a predictive tool to an agent of social mediation, especially with the rise of Generative AI, which can produce narratives and explanations that influence human decisions. While expanding the potential for innovation, this transformation also intensifies risks such as bias, opacity, and algorithmic persuasion. Based on experiences in complex domains—from the oil sector to oncology, from legislative analysis to the perception of insecurity—the lecture argues that the success of Information Systems depends less on the power of the models and more on the ability to integrate data, context, and values, highlighting an essentially epistemic barrier. Three structural tensions are discussed: between data and perception, between prediction and explanation, and between technical solutions and institutional trust. It concludes that the real challenge is not only what AI can do, but how to design it so that inclusion, explainability, and legitimacy are inherent, avoiding the automation of injustices.
