Student Manual

Congratulations to you if you have been accepted and selected for the Master’s or Doctoral program in Informatics at PPGI-UNIRIO!

To avoid feeling completely lost, follow the guidelines we have prepared for you in this manual.

Website

This website has been prepared to provide much of the information you need. Regulations, document and form templates, news, and general information about the academic life of the Program can be found here. Visit frequently and browse the pages.

Course Enrollment

To enroll in the course, you must go to the Secretariat on the date and time announced (usually on the selection process page) and fill out and sign 3 documents, namely:

  1. Confirmation of acceptance into the course,
  2. Commitment to Supervision Agreement, and
  3. Course registration form.

This is also the time to provide all the necessary documentation.

Once this is done, just focus on the first-semester classes and follow your supervisor’s guidance!

Enrolling in the PPGI-UNIRIO

By enrolling in the PPGI at UNIRIO, you become part of the Brazilian Information Systems research community. Therefore, it is extremely important that you create and keep your Lattes Curriculum (http://lattes.cnpq.br) updated; this is the database where all researchers in the country are registered.

Your Advisor

Upon entering the course and throughout your stay in the Program, you will have an advisor. This professor is academically responsible for the student, guiding them in their subjects and research development, and is primarily responsible for their evaluation. If you require any further assistance, contact them!

Secretariat

For questions regarding general registration procedures, course enrollment, various requests, documents, and other matters, you can visit the Program Secretariat in room 111 of the CCET Building (Av. Pasteur, 458, Urca, Rio de Janeiro-RJ). The email is ppgi.secretaria@unirio.br

Please note that most requests must be made online via the request systems on the PPGI website.

Student Representation

Students have representatives, elected from among the course’s students, who participate in the Program Board’s decision-making meetings (see names and contacts in the corresponding menu item). They mediate between students and professors, serving as a single point of contact for matters concerning the student community. Seek information on how to participate in discussions and be represented.

Coordination

The PPGI-UNIRIO has a coordination team responsible for managing the course, which you can contact to clarify any doubts, report problems, or offer suggestions:

PPGI Coordination:ppgi@unirio.br
Docotral Coordination:
coord.doutoradoppgi@uniriotec.br
Master’s Coordination: coord.mestradoppgi@uniriotec.br

Center for Pedagogical and Educational Affairs (NAPE)

In case of difficulties in remaining in and/or completing the course, or various academic problems, you can count on the support of the Center for Pedagogical and Educational Affairs (NAPE). NAPE members are staff with pedagogical training and can help co-construct an academic plan. Because they are not directly involved in the program’s academic activities as professors, they are well accepted by students. Students feel very comfortable seeking help and support from the center staff. In case of psychological support, NAPE members can also assist in appropriate referrals.

Website: https://nape.uniriotec.br/
E-mail: nape@uniriotec.br
Opening hours: Monday to Friday, from 1 PM to 7 PM
Location: Avenida Pasteur, 458, Urca, Rio de Janeiro – RJ, in the CCET Building, ground floor (to the right of the ramp)

Postgraduate Laboratories

The PPGI-UNIRIO laboratories are located in the Annex building (where the PPGI-UNIRIO Defense Room is located).

The thematic laboratories (one for each research line) are located on the 2nd floor (above the PPGI-UNIRIO Defense Room) and the Doctoral studies laboratory is on the ground floor (in front of the PPGI-UNIRIO Defense Room, on the right side of the corridor).

To use them, simply pick up the keys from the security team (at the entrance gate of the CCET building). Remember to return the keys at the end of use.

Institutional Email

Once you are enrolled and the registrar’s office registers you in the academic system, you can register an institutional email address @edu.unirio.br via the UNIRIO Identity Portal.

Course Registration

Once you are registered in the UNIRIO academic system, you will have a registration number. Then, you can register for courses through the Student Portal.

IMPORTANT: Please note the deadlines in the academic calendar and the course offerings for the semester (see the corresponding menu option). Before registering for courses or making any changes, talk to your advisor!

Attention! Students who are not registered for courses in a semester will be recorded as having dropped out, and their enrollment will be canceled.

If there is a change in advisor, the student and advisor must complete, sign, and send a new Advisory Commitment Form to the secretariat and coordination.

Scholarship students must update their Work Declaration whenever necessary.

You must register for courses even if you are in the extension period for your thesis defense.

LIBRARY

The PPGI-UNIRIO uses the Central Library (BC), located on the same campus where we conduct the Master’s and Doctoral programs in Informatics.

The Central Library’s opening hours are from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM (12 uninterrupted hours), five days a week. The branch units follow the opening hours of the units they are located in. They also offer digital library services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with open remote access (off-campus) to all internal and external information resources (bibliography) via  Rede CAFÉ and Eduroam. Permanent contact is available through social networks (Facebook, Instagram, and youtube). Manuals and tutorials are also available – http://www.unirio.br/bibliotecacentral/tutoriais, as well as specialized training – http://www.unirio.br/bibliotecacentral/treinamentos – in digital literacy and internet access, enabling consultation of scientific and technological literature on various specialized websites.

MOODLE AND CLASSROOM

Some courses use a learning support environment, available at http://moodleccet.uniriotec.br. You must access it with your institutional email. Alternatively, other courses use Google Classroom, available at http://classroom.google.com/. Carefully follow the discussions and materials provided.

ACCESS TO THE CAPES PERIODICALS PORTAL

Databases, digital books, the CAPES Portal, and other digital resources can be accessed remotely (off campus and from machines with internet access through channels external to the institution). For remote access, the user (student, professor, or administrative staff member registered in the SIE – Information System for Teaching) must be registered in the university’s “Identity Portal” – https://id.unirio.br/id/default/login – and use the same login and password. See the guidelines for remote access via CAFè.
